Employer: SME Commercial Consultancy
Engagement: Embedded with Tier 1 Rail Contractor (South Wales)
Location: Cardiff / Bridgend (Hybrid)
Working Pattern:

  • 2 days per week in Tier 1 contractor / company office
  • 1 day per week site-based
  • Remaining time supporting commission delivery, reporting, and development
    Employment Type: Permanent or Contract

Role Overview

We are seeking a Quantity Surveyor (Rail) to join a growing SME commercial consultancy, delivering embedded commercial support to a Tier 1 rail contractor in South Wales.

The role combines hands-on project delivery within the client organisation with wider consultancy support, offering exposure to multiple projects, robust NEC environments, and the opportunity to contribute to the growth and capability of a specialist consultancy.

Pay rates will be based on experience.

Key Responsibilities

Client-Embedded Delivery

  • Provide day-to-day commercial support to rail infrastructure projects delivered by a Tier 1 contractor
  • Support projects operating under NEC3 / NEC4 contracts
  • Prepare applications for payment, cost forecasts, CVRs, and commercial reports
  • Assist with the management and assessment of Compensation Events and Early Warnings
  • Support Defined Cost assessments, cost verification, and change control
  • Attend site meetings and progress reviews to support delivery teams

Contract & Commercial Support

  • Maintain accurate commercial records and ensure contract compliance
  • Assist with subcontractor procurement, valuation, and payment processes
  • Support risk and opportunity management and programme-related commercial impacts

Consultancy Support & Growth

  • Support the SME consultancy with consistent commercial processes and reporting
  • Assist in developing templates, guidance notes, and best practice tools
  • Provide commercial input across multiple commissions where required
  • Act as a professional representative of the consultancy when embedded with clients

Skills & Experience

  • Degree qualified in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management, or equivalent
  • Experience on rail or infrastructure projects
  • Working knowledge of NEC contracts
  • Comfortable working within contractor offices and live site environments
  • Strong communication, organisation, and commercial awareness

Desirable

  • Experience working with Tier 1 rail contractors
  • Progress toward or membership of RICS / CICES / CIOB
  • Experience supporting framework or long-term infrastructure contracts
  • Relevant degree (although suitable experience adequate)
