Cat 4 Technician - Holyhead
Job Description:
Rail Technician (CAT 4)
We are currently seeking a skilled and motivated Rail Technician (CAT 4) to join our growing rail engineering and maintenance team. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced rail professional who is looking to develop their technical skills further while working in a safety-critical and highly regulated environment.
The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting wheel lathe operations and post tyre turn (Post TT) activities, ensuring rolling stock is maintained to the highest standards of safety, quality, and compliance.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
As a Rail Technician (CAT 4), your primary responsibilities will include carrying out post tyre turn (Post TT) work, ensuring all wheelsets and components meet specified tolerances and engineering standards following machining operations. You will be responsible for setting up units on the wheel lathe, preparing equipment and rolling stock in line with approved procedures and manufacturer requirements.
You will assist the Lathe Operator as required, supporting safe and efficient operation of the lathe during wheel turning activities. This will include handling components, checking measurements, monitoring processes, and maintaining a clean and safe working environment. You will also be expected to carry out routine inspections, identify defects, and report any non-conformances in accordance with company and industry procedures.
The role requires strict adherence to rail safety standards, including compliance with all relevant maintenance instructions, risk assessments, method statements, and safe systems of work. You will contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, promote a strong safety culture, and support operational efficiency within the depot or workshop environment.
Experience and Skills Required
Applicants must be a certified CAT 4 Technician, with experience working within train maintenance or rolling stock environments. Previous involvement in post tyre turn work is essential, and experience with wheel lathe operation is highly desirable, though not essential as training can be provided for the right candidate.
A solid understanding of rail maintenance procedures, engineering tolerances, and safety-critical working practices is required. You should be capable of working both independently and as part of a team, with strong communication skills and a proactive approach to problem solving.
